Trick ‘r Treat is my personal favorite Halloween-themed horror movie . . . I think.
It’s a tough choice. Obviously there is John Carpenter’s classic Halloween, which I plan to do an interesting post about later this month. There are the silly, albeit enjoyable, movies like Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Then there are more modern classics like House of 1000 Corpses and Terrifier, both of which I absolutely love and both of which I might actually put higher on my list of overall favorite horror movies.
But Trick ‘r Treat embraces Halloween in a way few others do, seeming to make Halloween itself a character. Plus, it’s got everything you could want from a great horror movie: excellent gore and practical effects, plenty of sexuality, a brilliant script that both keeps you on edge and intertwines multiple narratives that somehow come together in one cohesive plot. And all the while, every scene feels very much like Halloween. It’s a must watch for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

That’s an 80 PHEMSA. That may be the highest score I’ve given since starting this rating system. So, yeah, you need to go watch this movie for Halloween!
Also something you need to do this month: Buy THE DARK SIDE OF HELL, my newest novel coming out on October 24th! This thing is as vile as they come. It’s also about Halloween, so you need to get it; otherwise, you risk losing that Halloween spirit!
The ebook is currently available for preorder on Amazon. Paperback version will be posted around the time of release.
Happy Halloween!
